Weird/Not Weird

The amount of weird coming out of MAGA mouths can be overwhelming. Here, we break it down. Check back for updates and breaking weird.

Weird

Trump keeps insisting that he's not weird. “We’re like you, we’re exactly like you,” the Epstein-socializing, family-separating, woman-hating, millionaire former reality TV star and convicted felon said about himself and his vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance, who became the target of an online joke that he had screwed a couch. "I think we’re extremely normal people."

Not Weird

From Harris' stories from her middle class background, like working at McDonalds in college, to Walz's 24 years of military service followed by years teaching and coaching football, the pair come off to everyday Americans as relatable human beings.

Weird

Die-hard Trump fans are carrying cups intended to represent JD Vance's sperm samples in a misguided show of support for his "family values," apparently a dig on families that have had to rely on IVF.

Not Weird

Democrats support IVF because we support families, and starting a family isn’t always easy. We're not sure when would be an appropriate time to carry around sperm samples as political props, but it's definitely not to be used as the punchline of a mean-spirited joke.

Weird

Trump promoted AI-generated images to falsely suggest that he had the endorsement of Taylor Swift and "Swifties for Trump," a group that does not exist.

Not Weird

While Taylor Swift has not made a presidential endorsement in 2024, she endorsed Biden/Harris in 2020 and said, "Gonna be watching and supporting @kamalaharris" on Instagram prior to the VP debate. Swifties for Kamala is a real group of Swift fans on Twitter with more than 62,000 followers supporting Kamala Harris.

Weird

This year, a jury convicted Donald Trump of 34 counts of felony fraud. Last year, a jury found that Trump raped journalist E. Jean Carroll and ordered him to pay $5 million in damages for defamation. He has also been accused of sexual assault by at least 26 women and was frequently photographed socially with criminally convicted pedophile Jeffery Epstein.

Not Weird

Kamala Harris has never been convicted of anything. Ever.

Weird

JD Vance wants to award families with children additional votes and penalize Americans who don't have children by raising their taxes. When the Senate voted on a bill to expand the child tax credit, Vance was a no-show.

Not Weird

As Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz awarded lower-income families child tax credits and free college tuition. He also signed a law for all Minnesota students to receive free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of income, so no child would feel shame when accepting the assistance.

Weird

Trump does not respect the US military. Trump recently said the Presidential Medal of Freedom is superior to the military Medal of Honor because its recipients are "often horribly wounded or dead." According to former chief of staff John Kelly, Trump referred to fallen WWI soldiers as “suckers” and “losers,” and refused to visit the cemetery to pay tribute because the rain would mess up his comb-over. On Memorial Day 2017, referring to Americans killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, Trump said, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” Trump faked bone spurs to avoid serving during the Vietnam War.

Not Weird

After JD Vance attempted to smear Tim Walz' 24 years of military service by accusing him of stolen valor and quitting to avoid deployment — accusations which are false — Walz defended anyone who put on a military uniform and thanked Vance for his service.

Weird

The primetime RNC lineup this year featured an OnlyFans model, a man who publicly slapped his wife, a rap/metal singer who pleaded no contest to assaulting a DJ at a strip club, and an '80s wrestling personality who had sex with his friend’s wife while the friend watched. The only living former Republican president, three living former Republican vice presidents and many former high-ranking Republican officials did not attend.

Not Weird

Former Democratic leaders Biden, Obama and the Clintons will all be speaking at the Democratic National Convention. We don’t know which non-political figures will top the lineup this year but over 30,000 people have volunteered. Update: celebrity appearances so far have included Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Kenan Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Amanda Gorman, USA Olympic basketball coach Steve Kerr, UAW President Shawn Fain (wearing a "Trump is a scab" t-shirt), Common, Patti LaBelle, Lil Jon, Spike Lee and Eva Longoria.

Weird

Donald Trump does not laugh. He does not appear to experience joy. His niece is on record saying Trump’s father did not believe in laughter, as it signals vulnerability. Do you know anyone that doesn’t laugh, like ever?

Not Weird

Laffin' Kamala” audibly responds to the comprehension of amusement with the involuntary expression of joy. You know, like most of us.

Weird

Former Trump Chief-Of-Staff, John Kelly shared in his 2023 book that Trump “talked about Ivanka Trump’s breasts, her backside, and what it might be like to have sex with her.” As a reminder, Ivanka is his daughter. He also famously said on The View, “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her."

Not Weird

Kamala Harris’ step-daughter, Emma Emhoff, lives in Bushwick and is a fashion designer, model and artist. She recently knitted a painting of her tiny teeth.

Not Weird

Tim Walz signed a law to provide free tampons in bathrooms for all 4th-12th graders in Minnesota schools. Students advocated for this legislation to address period poverty, and the issue has broad support. Over 28 states have passed similar legislation.

Weird

Trump says he mixes up people's names on purpose, intentionally mispronounces "Kamala" as a sign of disrespect and claims “no one has any idea what her last name is.”

Not Weird

Kamala Harris does this really not weird thing where she learns people’s names and does her best to remember and use them correctly. No source needed. Just watch her speak.

Weird

In an interview with Elon Musk, Trump claimed, “If you build a car in the United States, you can’t sell it in Europe. You just can’t sell it. It’s impossible.” The EU is the second largest market for US vehicle exports. In the same interview, Trump made threatening comments about workers who strike, despite the right to strike being protected by federal law.

Not Weird

Biden became the first President to ever walk a picket line when he joined the United Auto Workers last year. The UAW has endorsed Kamala Harris for President.

Weird

At the National Association of Black Journalists convention, Trump said “[Kamala] was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black.”

Not Weird

There are around 33 million people in the US who identify as multi-racial. There is nothing weird about identifying with both sides of your genetic heritage. Also, it’s well known that Kamala went to Howard University, an HBCU, and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historically Black sorority.

Weird

That glitchy, rambling interview with Elon Musk on X that really warrants no comment.

Not Weird

Except this.

Weird

JD Vance, when speaking about how his mother-in-law stepped away from her career to become a live-in nanny for the Vances' newborn baby, agreed that this is "the whole purpose of the post-menopausal female," and the "weird, unadvertised feature of marrying an Indian woman."

Not Weird

Weird

The Trump campaign played Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” without permission at a rally in Montana. You may remember this was the theme song from The Titanic. Associating his campaign with a literal sinking ship? Weird, dude.

Not Weird

The American Federation of Musicians endorses Kamala Harris for President. “For musicians concerned about protecting their rights against exploitation both intellectually and at work, ensuring the security of our pay, benefits, and retirement, Harris is the clear choice,” their president said in a statement.
